About Toma Matsuura

Japanese halfpipe skier from Ono Town, Gifu Prefecture, who grew up skiing the Oku-Mino resort area with his family and competes for Gifu Hino Motors. Became the first Japanese man to qualify for Olympic men's halfpipe in three Olympics and 12 years (since Kentaro Tsuda at the 2014 Sochi Games), clinching his 2026 Milano Cortina spot with a personal-best 8th place at the Copper Mountain World Cup in December 2025. Known for his stylistic, grab-focused approach (including a signature 'octopus grab,' a rarely-seen two-ski grip previously associated with Charles Gagnier) rather than pure rotation count; competed at the 2023 and 2025 FIS World Championships. Close with New Zealand's Ben Harrington on tour.

An 8th-place finish at Copper Mountain, his career-best World Cup result, secured his place at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics, ending a 12-year gap since Japan last had a man in Olympic halfpipe.

Sponsors: No ski/boot/binding sponsor could be confirmed via any source found (a detailed feature interview on steep.jp did not name an equipment brand); he competes under the corporate banner of Gifu Hino Motors (a truck manufacturer, not a ski-gear brand).
