About Ian McIntosh
Canadian big-mountain freeskier raised in the Kootenay mountains of interior British Columbia, and a former ski racer who competed in New Zealand's 2001 World Heli Challenge at 19. A longtime Teton Gravity Research and Warren Miller Entertainment film athlete known for his Alaska work, though in recent years he has largely shifted away from helicopter-assisted filming toward human-powered, foot-accessed descents.
Skiing legend' - CONFIRMED, BUT THE FRAMING MISSES A MAJOR CAREER PIVOT. McIntosh broke into TGR after his Whistler footage caught the crew's attention, earning the opening segment of a TGR film and then an invitation to Alaska. However, describing him purely as a 'heli-skiing legend' is dated: per TGR's own reporting, a brutal April 2011 (a same-week divorce, followed three days later by a broken femur suffered while pushing too hard on a spine line in Alaska) triggered a major shift, and McIntosh has since largely walked away from helicopter-assisted filming in favor of human-powered, foot-accessed lines, telling TGR 'I'll never use a heli to film skiing again.' He's since filmed on foot in places like India and Greece in addition to BC and Alaska. Equipment: rides the Volkl Shiro as his primary big-mountain ski ('the best I've ever had'), and was one of four freeriders (with Ross Tester, Kye Petersen, and Markus Eder) who co-developed Volkl's Revolt 114 as his self-described 'dream ski' prioritizing speed and performance in big-mountain terrain; also uses the Mantra on hardpack and the BMT 122/109 for backcountry touring depending on conditions.
