About Gus Schumacher

American cross-country skier (Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Center) born in Madison, Wisconsin and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. In 2020 became the first American to win an individual gold at the FIS Junior World Ski Championships, and in Feb. 2024 became the first American man to win a World Cup individual distance race since Bill Koch (1983), taking the 10km freestyle at the Stifel Loppet Cup in Minneapolis. Competed in the men's 30km skiathlon at the 2022 Beijing Olympics; at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics won a silver medal in the men's team sprint with Ben Ogden. Also a Protect Our Winters athlete who has testified before the U.S. Senate on climate policy.

No USA medal appears in any men's cross-country event that year (4x7.5km relay bronze went to Sweden; team sprint classical bronze also went to Sweden). Schumacher's best major-championship result to date is the 2026 Olympic team sprint silver with Ben Ogden; his individual World Cup best is 1st place, 10km freestyle, Feb. 2024 Minneapolis.
